NYK roped in to help petitioners

In a first of its kind, the Madurai district administration on Monday roped in a group of 20 volunteers from Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) to write free of cost the petitions for the public visiting the District Collector’s office for the grievance redressal meeting.

Usually, the public coming to the Collector’s office from far and wide across the district have to pay between Rs 30 and Rs 100 to the ‘petition writers’ to fill up various government forms in the right format and write petitions to submit them to the officials concerned at the grievance redressal meeting.

The people were surprised to see the NYK volunteers writing the petitions and filling the forms for free.

District Collector Dr TG.Vinay told newsmen that they had introduced this mechanism of working with volunteers so that the people from low socio-economic background would have access to a fair and just redressal system, even if they are uneducated.

Many people travel long distances to submit their petitions but end up seeking the help of these writers who sometimes charge exorbitantly. To curtail this, we reached out to a voluntary organisation which redirected us to this group of 20 people from NYK. The volunteers would be available from 9 am till 2 pm every Monday, he said.

Vinay said the volunteers have been taught to just write the basic gist of each petition. Most of the time, the petitions end up being really long. “We have told volunteers to write the gist and provide certain sub-headings so that it becomes easy for filing,” he added.
