CHENNAI: New voters whose applications are approved will receive their voter ID cards within 15 days, the Election Commission has said, following the Supreme Court’s order extending the voter enrolment period by 10 days, said a report by Daily Thanthi.

The draft electoral roll released as part of the special revision in Tamil Nadu saw the deletion of 97.37 lakh names. This included 66,44,881 voters who had shifted homes or were absent, and 3,98,278 voters who were duplicate entries. Of them, only those who had shifted or were absent are eligible to reapply.

Applications for inclusion in the electoral roll were accepted from December 19 to January 18, and the deadline was extended to January 30. During this period, around 16 lakh applications were received.

The Supreme Court has now directed that the application window be extended by a further 10 days.

Election officials said applications received so far are under scrutiny. Those whose applications are approved will first be allotted a voter ID card number, following which colour photo voter ID cards will be distributed within 15 days.
