CHENNAI: ‘Nalaiya Thiran’, an initiative aimed at exposing engineering college students to innovative experimental learning, has now been brought under the ‘Naan Mudhalvan”’ scheme, one of the pet projects of Chief Minister MK Stalin. Under this, skill-based learning is being provided to students by tech giants to increase their employability skills.

“Under Nalaiya Thiran, nearly 50,000 engineering students have benefited. Students are given real-world problems and are trained to provide solutions. Now the project has been merged with Naan Mudhalvan scheme for a holistic approach, “ IT Department Secretary Neeraj Mittal, told DT Next.

“Nalaiya Thiran” (skills of tomorrow), launched by the IT Department, is an experimental project-based learning. It is being implemented jointly by Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, Anna University, ICT academy and IBM. The main objective is to supplement the engineering course by bringing in industry experts and assessment with a certificate.

“IBM is the technological partner of this scheme. The students are trained to think technically and to be open minded. Usually, such training is provided by companies after recruiting students but under Nalaiya Thiran, skills are being provided in the colleges,” said Mittal.

The project is offered as an elective course for students of Information Technology and Computer Science engineering in their sixth semester. The assessment of the project is added to the university credit of students for better implementation of the project. Along with the students, 3,000 faculty members are also being trained under the project, Mittal added.
