Nagapattinam fisherman injured in attack by Sri Lankan pirates; items worth Rs 1 lakh looted

Fellow fishers came to their rescue and took them to the Vedaranyam coast.

TIRUCHY: Nagapattinam fishermen were attacked by Sri Lankan pirates while fishing in mid-sea off Kodiakkarai coast early Thursday.

According to sources, while four fishermen from Arukattuthurai village in Nagapattinam were fishing 20 nautical miles off Kodiakkarai in a country boat, a gang of five Sri Lankan pirates approached them and started attacking with lethal weapons. They later escaped with fishing equipment including GPS, nets and mobile phones, worth approximately one lakh rupees, as reported by Daily Thanthi.

One among the four fishers identified as Anbalagan (48) sustained head injuries. Fellow fishers came to their rescue and took them to the Vedaranyam coast. Anbalagan was rushed to the Vedaranyam GH where he is undergoing treatment.

The fishermen also passed on the information to the Coastal Security Group (CSG) who registered a case and commenced investigation.

The information was shared with the counterparts in Sri Lanka to identify the assailants.
