In this high voltage contest, the Vishal Krishna-led Pandavar Ani was contesting against K Bhagyaraj-led Swami Sankaradas Ani. Leading artistes from the industry like Vijay and Suriya were amongst the first to reach the polling both. Senior artistes like KR Vijaya and Sacchu too turned up as early as 10 am and even voiced their support for Vishal. However, veteran actor Mohan and senior most artiste Kollangudi Karupaayi couldn’t cast their ballot amid allegations of electoral fraud.

There was a report saying that the elections only saw 51 per cent turnout. However, speaking to DT Next, vice president of the Nadigar Sangam, Poochi Murugan, denied it. “The sangam comprises 1,800 members, out of which 1,604 members have cast their votes.

This means more than 90 per cent people cast their votes. Moreover, we are satisfied with how things panned out today and are looking at claiming a landslide victory.” When asked about the results, he said, “We were informed that the results are to be announced on July 8. But we haven’t heard it officially from the Election Commission yet.” While addressing the media earlier in the day, Vishal Krishna had said, “This election is a contest between money, power and integrity. Also, many members haven’t received their postal ballots. We need to take this up with the Election Commission.”

One of the notable actors who did not turn out to vote was Ajith Kumar. Ajith’s spokesperson said that the actor was out of town and could not participate in the polls. Ajith had also missed the last Nadigar Sangam polls as he was out of town last year too.
