MADURAI: Students of government schools in Thoothukudi had an educational day out enjoying the findings of the Sangam era archaeological site at Keezhadi in Sivaganga on Saturday.

The Keezhadi museum, located near the border of Madurai, was inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 5, 2023. It gained international prominence, attracting many domestic and overseas visitors.

Minister for Finance, Environment and Climate Change, Thangam Thennarasu, accompanied the Thoothukudi MP, and explained the historical importance with archaeological evidence of human activities from ancient times found in Keezhadi.

During their visit, the children got a glimpse of unearthed artefacts such as broken pottery remains, beads, coins, pendants, terracotta objects and precious stones. The MP facilitated the excursion for 219 students, which took place from 2.30 pm to 5 pm.

Director of Keezhadi Excavation Site and Archaeological Officer Ramesh, archaeologist Ajay Kumar and guides were present.

While talking to reporters, Kanimozhi credited CM Stalin for having created the Keezhadi museum to help people, especially the younger generation, understand the early historic period and cultural influences of Tamil civilisation.

The MP also criticised the BJP government at the Centre for replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme with the intent to wind down the scheme, which caters to the livelihood support to the poor and the rural community. Since the BJP came to power at the Centre, the number of working days under this scheme has also come down to 40 from 100. It would adversely affect the rural economy as well, she said.
