The names of the arrested were given as Devakumar, a functionary of TMMK (Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam), his brother Anbu Frank and Sathyaraj all from different areas in Vellore.

The trio had promised one Srinivasan of Puducherry village in Chengalpattu district to get admission for this son in the Vellore CMC Medical College and thereby collected Rs 57 lakh in 2017. They failed to deliver on their promise. Srinivasan after waiting for some time demanded his money back. The trio showed their true colours saying that they would not return the money and threatened him with bodily harm if he persisted in demanding the return of money.

Then, Srinivasan complained to the crime branch who arrested all three and remanded them to custody. Devakumar and Anbu Frank were already notorious. They had threatened rivals in a church election with guns which were later seized by the police.
