According to police, Sithan, 55, from a village near Kalipatty in Namakkal, used to harass his wife Eswari, demanding money to consume liquor. Unable to bear his torture, Eswari had slept outside her house on Thursday night.

In an inebriated condition, Sithan hacked the woman with a sickle. He then committed suicide by consuming poison in the nearby farm.

The police said he had locked the house from outside to prevent his three sons, Ayyandurai, 27, Krishnamurthy, 25 and Murugan, 23, who were sleeping inside, from coming out.

The incident came to light only on Friday morning, when they woke up and found the doors locked from outside. The trio then came out by opening the roof tiles. On receiving information, the Mallasamudram police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies of the couple for a post-mortem at Salem Government Hospital. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
