CHENNAI: A 42-year-old man died after he accidentally fell into an under-construction stormwater drainage at Mangadu in the Kancheepuram district in wee hours of Thursday.

The Mangadu panchayat is constructing a SWD in the locality and on Malaipakkam road the pit which was dug was filled with rainwater following rain in the past week. On Thursday morning, the locals noticed an unidentified man lying dead in the SWD and informed the police. The Mangadu police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body. They identified the deceased as Lakshmipathy of the same locality who was working as a driver in a private college in Manimangalam.

Police said on Thursday early morning Lakshmipathy left home for work and while walking on the road he slipped and fell inside the SWD which was about three-feet in depth. However, the municipality officials said that Lakshmipathy might have consumed liquor. However, the neighbours refused it and said Lakshmipathy works as a driver in the college and he is also in charge of the maintenance for all the buses so he would never go to college in an intoxicated condition.

The Mangadu police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
