Madras HC seeks EPS's response in defamation plea

DTNEXT Bureau

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami to file a counter affidavit to the petition filed by expelled former AIADMK legislator KC Palanisamy seeking Rs 1 crore as compensation for defamation.

In his petition, KC Palanisamy stated that at the instigation of Edappadi Palaniswami, AIADMK's Sulur Union Secretary, P Kandavel, lodged a police complaint against him in 2020, accusing him of enrolling fake party members and collecting money.

Based on this complaint, the police registered a case, arrested him, and lodged him in prison and after 19 days, he was released on bail, the petition stated.

KC Palanisamy further noted that the High Court quashed this criminal case in 2024. Arguing that these false allegations had tarnished his reputation and caused him mental agony, he sought Rs 1 crore as damages from Edappadi Palaniswami and Kandavel.

He also requested the court to restrain both Edappadi Palaniswami and Kandavel from making any further defamatory statements against him.

After hearing the petition, Justice P Dhanabal ordered Edappadi Palaniswami and Kandavel to file their counters by February 13 and adjourned the case.
