Lorry smuggling PDS rice from Kanchi meets with accident

Police said they had planned to smuggle rice to Karnataka, but failed to do so since the lorry met with an accident.

CHENNAI: A lorry in which huge quantity of ration rice being smuggled to Karnataka from Kancheepuram met with an accident on the Kundrathur-Sriperumbudur road on Sunday.

Somangalam police on Saturday night received a piece of information that a lorry had fallen inside the Arampedu Lake which is near the Kundrathur-Sriperumbudur road. Soon, the police rushed to the spot and they found there were several bags of rice loaded in the lorry.

Police then checked the rice bags and found it was ration rice, which was smuggled from Kancheepuram. Later, they informed the Civil Supplies police in Kancheepuram, who visited the spot, and recovered the rice bags weighing about 5 tonnes.

The police with the help of the registration number arrested the owner Janakiraman (38) of Sirukaveripakkam in Kancheepuram and lorry driver Karan (23).

Police said they had planned to smuggle rice to Karnataka, but failed to do so since the lorry met with an accident.

The police have registered a case and are investigating to nab the people who are behind the smuggling.
