According to sources, loose soil had collapsed on the concrete bus shelter in Kotagiri in the early morning hours. This is the second incident barely in a week’s time as a landslip was reported just a few days ago at the same spot. Boulders, which had then rolled down the slope, had fallen on mini buses there, causing damage to its windshields. Town Panchayat officials then removed the debris from the spot. After an inspection, Revenue department officials had suggested the uprooting of those camphor trees standing precariously nearby the bus stand. Following this, works were under way over the last few days to chop down those trees on the slopes.
Meanwhile, another spell of rains on Monday night triggered the second landslip. Mounds of mud fell on top of the concrete bus stop shelter, threatening to damage the structure.
Town panchayat officials sprang into action and removed the mud. Following frequent incidents of landslips in the locality, Town Panchayat officials have planned to construct revetment wall on the slope. While mentioning that soil samples have been sent for lab testing, an official said, “On receiving the report, efforts will be taken to raise a revetment wall by availing funds from the district administration”.
Rains also lashed several western districts, including Coimbatore and Tirupur.
Meanwhile, the low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal off South Sri Lankan coast intensified into a well-marked low pressure area over Comorin area and the adjoining equatorial Indian ocean on Tuesday. The Met department has forecast squally weather with lightning and thunderstorm, with wind velocity increasing to 65 km per hour, as likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu coast and Comorin area during the next 48 hours.
