CHENNAI: Following a retort to A Raja's speech by BJP's Coimbatore district chief Uttama Ramasamy, he was arrested. The development came after the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam lodged a complaint against him.

A Raja sparked controversy with his controversial "Shudras, sons of prostitutes" speech in a gathering. To condemn the Nilgiris MP, Uttama Ramasamy launched a salvo against him which was objectionable to some.

The BJP cadres got on the roads to condemn the arrest of their leader.

Tamil Nadu's BJP chief Annamalai responded to the arrested on his social media handle. He wrote on his Twitter that Ramasamy's "only mistake was to condemn A Raja for his remarks on 'Shudras as sons of prostitutes'".

He went to criticise the DMK government asking why it hasn't taken any action against A Raja who "continuously verbally attacks Hindus and disturbs the social fabric". He added that BJP will remain undaunted in the face of DMK's "autocracy"
