TIRUCHY: Officials from the Union Home Ministry, along with the Central Forensic Department, on Friday inspected the tragedy site at Velusamypuram, where 41 people lost their lives, and 110 others were injured during a political campaign event of TVK chief Vijay.

The central teams arrived at the venue around 11.25 am and conducted a digital survey of the area. Their visit assumes significance in the backdrop of Vijay being called for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi.

The officials arrived in three vehicles and inspected the meeting venue as well as the makeshift shed housing a generator, where several victims were found dead. The inspection lasted for over an hour, during which entry to the site was restricted. The team later left for the PWD guest house near the Collectorate, where the CBI team is housed.

Earlier, the CBI had conducted extensive inquiries with officials from various departments, including the local police, State Highways Department, eyewitnesses, injured persons, families of the deceased, TVK functionaries, nearby residents and vendors operating around the venue.

On Thursday, CBI officials questioned State Highways Department personnel, focusing on the proximity of the highway to the meeting venue and the adequacy of the site's entry and exit points.
