CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced that an international airport would be built in Hosur to support industrial development in the region.
Making a suo motu statement under rule 110 in the state assembly, the CM said that the airport would have the capacity to handle 30 million passengers per year and would be developed across 2,000 acres in Hosur.
Stating that the state government was implementing several visionary projects in Hosur to develop it into an important economic zone, Stalin said that a master plan for Hosur was nearing completion. He also reiterated that the state industries department was taking several initiatives to achieve the target of making Tamil Nadu a one trillion dollar economy by 2030.
Minister for Industries, TRB Rajaa, who has been advocating for an airport in Hosur since his tenure in the State Planning Commission, said, "The Hosur airport project will greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth, benefiting not only Hosur but also neighbouring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem, while also providing a significant boost to various parts of Bengaluru. With Hosur's excellent weather, the new airport will foster a twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru, propelling growth in both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka."
Hosur already has good connectivity to EXIM gateways and is near other major business hubs and industrial clusters, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Sriperumbudur, and Coimbatore, a government release said, adding that the region has become a cluster for auto and EV manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, logistics, electronics, and will soon also have an IT park.
Prominent companies such as Tata Electronics, TVS, Ashok Leyland, Titan, and Rolls-Royce (IAMPL) already run significant operations in the area, the release stated.
World class library and knowledge center in Trichy
Stalin also announced the construction of a mega library-cum-knowledge center in the name of former chief minister ‘Kalaignar’ M Karunanidhi in the delta district of Trichy, along the lines of the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai and the Kalaignar Centenary Library in Madurai.
Construction of a similar library in Coimbatore, which was announced in the state budget, would start later this year, the CM informed the state assembly.
The Chief Minister added that the libraries announced for Coimbatore and Trichy would be an extension of the library-cum-knowledge center development mission of the DMK government which had unveiled the Kalaignar Centenary Library in Madurai on September 15, 2023. The DMK had laid the foundation for the library development mission in Chennai in 2010 when the then CM Karunanidhi had established the 3.3 lakh sq ft Anna Centenary library capable of accommodating 1,200 people at Kotturpuram in Chennai, he noted.
