Speaking to DT Next, Rajendar said it was in Tiruchy on Tuesday that he realised it was the right time to announce the move, ahead of MK Stalin’s birthday on Wednesday.

“Tiruchy was associated with important political events. It ended up being the venue for one of the most important decisions in my life as well. AILDMK will no more be a part of DMK and I will be at liberty to come up with important decisions,” TR said.

On whether he will be announcing key decisions as a politician from now on, he said, “I am not a politican, I am a statesman who cares for the wellbeing of the people. Everyone announces new political parties only to become a CM. Have you ever heard me saying I am floating a party to become the CM?”

Asked if he would extend support to Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan, he said, “Neither of them have approached me. However, we are very good friends and I prefer not to say anything more.”
