In a bizarre incident, a man has been caught on camera stealing inner garments of women left out in the open in the district. The unidentified accused, for whom a search is on by a special police team, was also found wearing their clothes and ornaments.

According to sources, the man-believed to be a kleptomaniac-used to scale houses at Meenakshi Garden near Kavundampalayam to lay his hands particularly on women’s garments and their slippers. Residents were perplexed over frequent incidents of women’s garments left to dry in the verandah and terrace of their houses going missing.

A few days ago too, the inner garments and sandals of women inmates in several houses were complained to be stolen, allegedly by the man in question. Residents then reviewed footage from CCTVs located in their neighbourhood to find a youth scaling a house to steal garments and slippers. It was not all as in one of his multiple visits, the thief was even caught wearing a nightie and anklets.

Following this, residents went on a search around the neighbourhood and found the stolen garments dumped at the backyard of a house, which has remained locked for a long time. The garments were all found torn and a pile of stolen slippers in a burnt state.

On receiving information, the Thudiyalur police rushed to the spot and held inquiries.

The police said that the youth, aged around 30 years, might be a pervert, with an obsession for women’s garments. They added that the accused may even be wearing those garments for a while before throwing them away.

While residents of the locality have decided to carry out night patrolling and install more CCTVs in the neighbourhood to prevent such theft, a search is on by a special team of the Coimbatore rural police to nab the culprit.
