Shocked on receiving the challan through post at her residence, Karthika (36) from Panamarathupatty claimed that she was in her house in Salem on the day when she was fined for helmetless riding by Manali police on December 3.

“Though I own a scooter, I had never taken it to Chennai. I believe that someone else is riding a vehicle with a fake number board as that of mine,” she said to media.

The Chennai police have been slapping fines on violators through automatic number plate recognition cameras that can read the number plates of vehicles.

“As the woman had not driven her scooter in Chennai, there is a possibility for someone else using a fake number board,” said a cop.
