Gram Sabha meetings should not be conducted in religious places: TN

In a letter, written by Darez Ahamed, Commissioner, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, addressed to all the district collectors except Chennai, the officer had directed them to ensure that the Gram Sabha meetings are conducted in all the panchayats in which all wards are covered based on rotation basis.

CHENNAI: The state Rural Development Department had directed the district administrations to ensure that the Gram Sabha meetings to be held on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, should not be conducted at places associated with any religion.

In a letter, written by Darez Ahamed, Commissioner, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, addressed to all the district collectors except Chennai, the officer had directed them to ensure that the Gram Sabha meetings are conducted in all the panchayats in which all wards are covered based on rotation basis.

He also directed them to hold the meetings by 11 am on October 2 and asked them to ensure that the meetings are not conducted in religious places.

Prior information about the place and timings should be given to people of the panchayats and collectors are asked to ensure that all the people of the panchayats participate actively in the Gram sabha meetings.
