After the government doctors went on a statewide protest on September 21, 2018, the Health Department officials had promised to meet the demands within six weeks. However, the Dynamic Assured Career Progression has not been implemented yet.

In August 2019, the doctors had held indefinite strike on the same issue, which was called off after talks with the Health Minister. However, according to doctors, the issue has not yet been resolved. The 118 doctors who did not agree to call off the strike were transferred; the transfer orders were withdrawn only about few months ago.

The salary that the doctors in central government service receive after 14 years of service is equal to what the State government doctors receive after 21 years of service in government hospitals, pointed out Dr S Perumal, an office-bearer of SDPGA. “The long pending demand of payment to the doctors on State government service on a par with the central healthcare staff remains unfulfilled,” he said.

The members of Federation of Government Doctors Association added that they too had put forth demands including reservations for service doctors, postings of doctors based on the patient load in government hospitals, and conducting counselling for service postings across the State. However, Health Department has not taken any decision in this regard.

Senior Health officials said discussions were held with government doctors last year, adding that decisions regarding the implementation of the policies would be taken after the COVID-19 was brought under control.
