According to complainant I Salam (30) of South Perumal Maistry, South Gate, who runs a gold jewellery workshop on Chinnakadai Street, a gang comprising seven persons from Mumbai approached him on June 25 this year, claiming that they were agents and wanted to procure jewels for a trader in Mumbai. The gang persuaded the complainant and bought 1,170 grams of gold waste particles worth Rs 42 lakh from him and a friend. On believing their words that they would settle the amount soon, Salam and his friend gave away the gold waste particles without receiving the payment and the gang left the scene. Later, the gang paid Rs 2 lakh to Salam, but failed to settle the balance amount. Recently, Salam came to know that he was cheated by the gang and took the issue to the notice of the South Gate police, who on Saturday night filed a case against the gang members. A hunt is on to nab the accused, the police said.
