Police said Nagaraj (45) state secretary of Akila Bharatha Hindu Mahasabha was riding his two-wheeler at Hanumantha Nagar in Hosur, when the assailants intercepted him in a car at 8.30 am.

Then a gang of around five men got down from the car and began to attack him in full public view. Though Nagaraj tried to escape, the assailants chased and attacked him with weapons resulting in his death on the spot.

The murderers then escaped in their car. On receiving information, a police team from Hosur station rushed to the spot and sent the body of the deceased for post mortem to Hosur Government Hospital. A sniffer dog, which was pressed into service, remained clueless after running for a short distance.

The deceased is survived by his wife Manjula, 37, a son and three daughters. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Nagaraj could have been murdered due to financial issues in his real estate business. The Hosur police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
