Former minister Indira Kumari passes away at 73

Kumari was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate from Natrampalli constituency in 1991 election.

CHENNAI: Former minister and president of DMK literary wing Ms Indira Kumari passed away due to illness at a private hospital here on Monday.

Indira Kumari (73) was undergoing treatment reportedly for kidney related ailments at a leading corporate hospital in the city. She was a minister in former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s cabinet during the 1991-96 AIADMK tenure. She was the president of DMK literary wing.

“Softspoken Indira Kumari enjoyed conversations with party cadres and would often recollect the days of MGR and Kalaignar. She had the ears of Amma (Jayalalithaa) and Kalaignar during her prime time in politics,” recalled a former AIADMK functionary K Ashok.

It may be noted that in 2021 Indira Kumari along with her husband was convicted by a special court for MLAs and MPs in connection with misappropriation of funds.
