CHENNAI: A 34-year-old AIADMK man was arrested for attempting to murder a former councillor from his own party in Kancheepuram on Wednesday night. Initial inquiry has pointed to an intra-party feud for the murder bid.

A murder attempt was made at Kannipiran (45), a former councillor and current zonal secretary of the AIADMK, when he was sitting outside his house on Pandavar Thudar Perumal Koil Street and chatting with friends in the night. Saravanan, a resident and fellow party man from AIADMK from the same locality, came with a sickle and started to attack him, police said.

Kannipiran ran into his house to save his life, but Saravanan did not stop and chased him and tried to kill him. Kannipiran’s two sons and friends intervened, stopped Saravanan and trashed him.

Later, the Sivakanchi police team arrived at the scene and arrested Saravanan. Kannipiran, who had suffered multiple cut injuries, was taken to Kancheepuram Government Hospital for treatment.

Police stated that both Kannipiran and Saravanan are affiliated with the AIADMK, and they have not been on good terms since the 2021 elections. During questioning, Saravanan told the police that he wanted to murder Kannipiran for internal party issues. Still, the police are investigating whether the attack was due to internal party issues or if there are any other reasons behind the murder attempt.
