Five bull owners among 23 hurt in Thanjavur jallikattu

As many as 23 persons including five bull owners were injured in the jallikattu organised in view of Sivarathri in Veeramuniyandavar temple, Nanjikottai in Thanjavur on Saturday.

As many as 667 bulls and 283 tamers participated in the event after a medical assessment by the veterinary doctors. Bulls from various places including Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Karaikudi, Tiruchy and Dindigul took part and the Collector (incharge) Manimekalai flagged offthe event.


Around 283 tamers from Thanajvur and adjacent districts took part after the medical test by a team of doctors. The tamers were divided into groups and each team was given separate uniforms and they were allowed to be in the arena for around 1.30 hours. Prizes like cot, chair, stainless steel utensils, mobile phones and refrigerators were given to those who tamed the bulls and the owners of those bulls that were not tamed.


The event was jointly organised by various departments including revenue, medical, police and fire and rescue departments in which as many as 23 persons including five owners were injured. Manikandan from Mettupatti was adjudged the best tamer for taming 25 bulls and he was given the refrigerator as prize.
