Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar warns of legal action if ‘Kaala’ songs disrupt peace in state

Hours before the audio launch of actor Rajinikanth’s ‘Kaala’ on Wednesday, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar sounded a stern warning saying that legal action would be taken if the songs were found to be disrupting peace in the state. Most of the lyrics in the film were politically loaded hitting out at the government besides raising its voice against Dalit oppression.

The Minister said people should not create confusion for political gains and the government would not allow attempts to incite people through cinema. Listing the songs of AIADMK founder MGR, he said those numbers had messages for all people and compared films like ‘Kaala’ to mushroom which would vanish soon.

Some of the songs in the movie are laden with political messages and one of the tracks ‘Pathingiadangi vaazha naanga innumadimaiya’ (Are we still slaves to hide and live in subjucation) is considered to be song against caste hegemony against Dalits.

Earlier, some of the dialogues in Rajinikanth’s previous movie ‘Kabali’ too met criticism from a few parties which charged that they were against a few communities. A song in Rajinikanth’s film ‘Sivaji’ ‘Kaveri aarum kaikutralarisiyum’ too drew criticism from some quarters who said the actor had not supported the cause of Cauvery in Tamil Nadu and predicting that the river would go dry in the state.
