CHENNAI: The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Tuesday said its president Vijay would appear again before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a date to be fixed by the agency, even as the party stood by its earlier demand for a Supreme Court-monitored central probe into the Karur stampede tragedy that claimed 41 lives last September.

Addressing reporters at Chennai airport after returning from New Delhi, TVK joint secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar said Vijay had complied with the CBI summons and given his statement at the agency's office on Monday.

The CBI has informed us that they will communicate the next date of appearance. The leader has ongoing meetings related to the party and his film commitments, including discussions on Jana Nayagan, and will appear again on the date fixed by them
Nirmal Kumar

Without divulging details of the proceedings inside the CBI office, Nirmal Kumar alleged serious inconsistencies in the official narrative. "The Chief Minister had said 607 police personnel were deployed for security at Karur. But a senior police officer, Davidson Devasirvadham, has stated the number was 500. There are clear lapses on the part of the State government," he said.

He further claimed that procedural violations occurred in the handling of the victims. "We have submitted documentary evidence to the CBI that post-mortems were not conducted properly and that signatures were obtained from the relatives of the deceased on documents that were pre-dated," Nirmal Kumar alleged.

On questions about support expressed by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for Jana Nayagan, which Vijay has announced as his final film, Nirmal Kumar said: "The case related to the film is pending before the High Court and the Supreme Court. We thank everyone who has extended their support."

Vijay had travelled to Delhi along with TVK election campaign general secretary Aadhav Arjuna and Nirmal Kumar in connection with the inquiry into the Karur 'Makkal Sandhippu' rally held on September 27 last year, where 41 people died in a stampede.
