CHENNAI: PMK Founder S Ramadoss on Wednesday urged the State government to fill the existing teacher vacancies by recruiting permanent teachers.

"The State government announced filling up 13,331 teacher vacancies by recruiting temporary teachers but not even 20 per cent of teachers were filled so far. It has been 73 days since the schools have reopened and the quarterly exams are nearing but in most schools students are suffering without teachers and so the State government should not further hesitate in filling the vacancies," said Ramadoss, in a statement.

He also said that after the State government announced recruiting temporary teachers the recruitment in 14 districts was stayed by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, but in the remaining districts only 2,600 teachers have been recruited and still, 10,731 teachers have not been recruited.

Ramadoss further said that the northern districts are the worst affected as in 3,800 schools there is only one teacher each. Also, among the 13,331 vacancies which were about to be filled 11,874 are in northern districts.

As far as post-graduate teachers are concerned the recruitment process of permanent is almost complete and the State government should immediately commence the recruitment of graduate teachers, urged Ramadoss.
