“The state government’s announcement to celebrate Tamil Week from December 21 to 27 is a welcome step, but it is sad that Government Order (GO) mandating shops to have name boards in Tamil, passed before 42 years has not been implemented in letter and spirit,” said Anbumani, in a statement.

Anbumani,  during his trip to Thailapuram from Chennai noticed shops where not even one had Tamil name boards. “I was shocked to see Tamil missing on name boards and the GO passed by former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran passed in 1977 has not been implemented successfully in the state,” said Anbumani.

He further said that the PMK in 1997 announced a protest to deface the English name boards with tar. But, the protest dropped following an assurance from the then CM M Karunanidhi.
