KANNIYAKUMARI: Around 40 government and government-aided schools in Kanyakumari district have been provided with basic infrastructure facilities by PT Selvakumar, secretary of the Thenkumari Educational Trust, film director and producer.

In addition, Selvakumar has constructed classrooms at James Town LMS School, where he studied, to enable students to pursue English-medium education free of cost.

Speaking about the initiative, Selvakumar said the future of India lay in the hands of students and that schools played a crucial role in shaping them.

“With that sense of social responsibility, I have been extending whatever support is required to government and government-aided schools,” he said.

He noted that student enrolment had been low in more than 10 schools, including the government schools at Nallur and Kumarapuram Thoppur. An assessment revealed that the lack of basic facilities was the main reason for the decline. “We ensured that all essential facilities were provided and also organised sports competitions and other activities to motivate students,” he said.

Following these measures, enrolment has increased in the concerned schools, Selvakumar added, stating that his educational service would continue in the coming years.
