The girl, who lived with her widowed mother and grandfather, stayed back at home while her guardians who are employed as daily wage labourers headed to work every day. The four accused who were identified as P Selvaraj (49), Deputy Organiser of DMK Tiruchy district farmers wing; T Selvaraj (51), a tea stall owner; Muthu (57), a milk vendor; and Ramaraj (45), a fuel station attendant, were familiar to the victim’s grandfather and used to frequent his house.
Sources said the girl had repeatedly undergone sexual assault by the gang for over seven months. When recently, her health worsened, her mother discovered she was pregnant. Soon, she was rushed to the Tiruchy GH where the doctors confirmed her pregnancy.
Subsequently, the girl’s mother lodged a complaint with the Jeeyapuram All Women Police station. Inspector P Vijayalakshmi registered a case against the four under various sections including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and arrested them. They were later lodged under judicial custody.
