“With the bi-monthly billing adopted by the Tangedco, the consumers who are consuming over 500 units were forced to pay twice the charge. The electricity consumption charge for the lockdown period has gone up over the government provided relief of Rs 1,000,” CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan said in a statement.

Pointing out that Kerala and several other state governments have reduced the electricity charges of public, he said that considering the difficulties faced by the public, the Tamil Nadu government should also protect the domestic consumers from steep increase in the power bills. “We demand the government to collect the same electricity charges paid by the public before the lockdown until the situation becomes normal. The excess amount in the bill should be paid by the government to the Tangedco as a relief to the public,” he said.

Balakrishnan said that his party would conduct the campaign by distributing the printed copies of the petition to the public and they would also make use of the online petitions as well.
