TIRUCHY: The Tiruchy Sooriyur jallikattu started with Collector V Saravanan on Friday, in which 63 persons, including 20 spectators, one policeman and a home guard personnel while nine persons were referred to the Government Hospital.
The annual jallikattu event of Sooriyur commenced on Friday at the mini stadium constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore and inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday.
As many as 668 bulls and 334 tamers took part in the event, and the tamers were divided into seven batches. The district collector flagged off the event after administering the oath to the tamers. Since there were permanent galleries in the stadium, all the spectators were safe and the tamers had a free environment while taming the bulls that were released to the arena from the Vadivasal.

As many as 63 persons, including 11 tamers, 21 bull owners, and 20 spectators, sustained injuries.
While the event was on, one of the bulls hit a police personnel, Karthik from Manikandam police station, on his right wrist, and he was given first aid by a team of doctors available. A home guard personnel, Ganga, sustained injuries in the leg when a bull hit her at the collection point.
Among the injured, nine were referred to the GH, and others were sent home after treatment in the venue itself. Moorthi from Sooriyur was adjudged the best tamer for taming 12 bulls, and he was presented with a car.
