COIMBATORE: A 48-year-old man died after the damp mud wall of his house collapsed in Coimbatore during the early hours of Friday.

Police said that the deceased, Shankar Ganesh, a labourer, was asleep in the mud house at Madurai Veeran Kovil Street in Kangayampalayam town near Sulur, when the weak wall collapsed on him around 2.30 am.

He had been residing in the house built by his father for over 30 years.

Due to continuous rains in Coimbatore over the last few days, the wall became damp resulting in its collapse.

As Shankar's wife raised an alarm, their neighbours removed the debris and found Ganesh to be in an unconscious state. The 108 ambulance crew, who arrived at the spot, examined him and found that he had already died.

His body was sent for a post-mortem exam at the ESI hospital.

The Sulur police have registered a case and inquiries are on.

Similarly, the wall of a house in Pollachi had also collapsed due to rains, injuring a person. Police said that P Kanagasabapathy, 22, from Jameenmuthur near Pollachi, had suffered head injuries after a wall in his house collapsed on him. The youth was immediately rescued by his neighbours and sent to a private hospital for treatment.

After days of heavy downpour resulting in mud slips, tree collapses, and disruption of normal life, rains eased a bit in the Nilgiris, which received only moderate rains on Friday. However, gutsy winds caused damage to plantain crops in the district.
