COIMBATORE: A cop has been placed under suspension for misbehaving with a 20-year-old college student in a Coimbatore-bound train from Chennai.

The victim, a student of Government Law College in Coimbatore, was returning from Chennai by Coimbatore Intercity Express, when the cop, head constable Sheikh Abdul Khader (35) of the RS Puram station, misbehaved with her.

The cop in plain clothes, who was returning from Chennai after official work, was seated next to the girl in the reservation compartment. While pretending to be asleep, the cop repeatedly touched her inappropriately. Despite her repeated attempts to shove him off, the cop continued his inappropriate behaviour.

The student then discreetly video recorded the sexual harassment on her mobile phone and confronted him with evidence. Though the cop claimed ignorance and his act of touching was unintentional, the complainant showed the video to co-passengers, who then condemned his inappropriate behaviour.

The student made a complaint to the railway police in Katpadi. During the inquiry, it was revealed that Sheikh was attached to the RS Puram police station. Following this, Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A Saravana Sundar, on Wednesday, issued an order suspending the cop. Further disciplinary action is likely to be taken after completion of the inquiry.
