Centre urged to divert 200 tmc from Godavari to Cauvery basin

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday urged the Centre to divert at least 200 tmc water from the Godavari to the Cauvery basin as the initial stage of the inter-state river water linkage.

Delivering his customary address to the state Assembly, Governor Banwarilal Purohit said as Tamil Nadu was a water deficit state, inter-basin transfer of river water was essential to meet its water needs.


“To fulfill this need, this government urges the Centre to divert at least 200 tmc of water from the Godavari to the Cauvery basin, as the initial stage of the inter-state river water linkage,” headded. Cauvery-Gundar linkage project


The state government on its part, will pursue inter-linking of rivers within Tamil Nadu and will implement the Cauvery-Gundar River linkage project, under which the Cauvery-South Vellar link will be taken up as the firstphase in the ensuing financial year as alreadyannounced by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami,he said.
