CCTVs in 1,000 Chennai buses to ensure women’s safety: Minister

In order to ensure safety of the women passengers, the state government has decided to install CCTV cameras in the buses and initially around 1,000 buses would have the facility, said Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar in Karur on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, the Minister said, the e-buses would be operational in Chennai after the Vellore Lok Sabha elections and subsequently, the cities like Madurai and Coimbatore would have such buses.

Stating that the fire accident at a transport workshop in Chennai as unfortunate, the Minister said, the building was not weak but still, an amount of Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned by the Chief Minister for the renovation of the building.

Similarly, a fund of Rs 1,019 crore has been allocated to disburse the dues for the transport pensioners and the remaining dues would be distributed in a phased manner, the Minister said.  

Pointing out to the direction of the Madras High Court on monitoring transport workshops under CCTV surveillance, Vijayabaskar said, the Transport Commissioner has submitted the report in the court on the status of the court direction.

Meanwhile, the Minister said that the department is much concerned about the safety of the women passengers. In order to ensure their safety while travelling, around 1,000 buses in Chennai would have CCTV cameras initially. “This project would be undertaken with 60 per cent funding from Centre while the state government would spend 40 per cent,” he said and added that the project would be expanded to the other parts of the state gradually.
