CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has given his nod to an ordinance to ban online rummy in the State. According to sources, the file was sent to Raj Bhavan on October 1 after the State Cabinet approved the draft Ordinance.

This has come at time when the State reported two more suicides after losing money in online rummy in two days.

Announcing a four-member committee on June 10 in the backdrop of the State recording a series of suicides allegedly due to losses sustained by online rummy players, Chief Minister MK Stalin had announced that an ordinance would be promulgated based on the committee’s recommendation considering the immediate need for finding a solution to the social problem (online rummy/ gambling).

Following the report submitted by the Justice Chandru committee, the State cabinet met to take a decision on enacting an ordinance to ban online rummy in June.

The committee consisted of IIT professor Mr Sankararaman, psychologist Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar of Sneha Foundation and ADGP Vinit Dev Wankhede.
