Assault on students: NCPCR summons Thanjai Collector

TIRUCHY: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Tuesday issued a notice summoning Thanjavur District Collector Deepak Jacob to appear before it within a week in connection with an assault on the students of a school, who were detained by a team of police, on charges of assaulting a teacher.

Sources said that Saranya, a teacher of Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Vallam, while walking through the playground of the institution on on August 7 this year was hit by an unknown object and injured. She had informed about the incident to her husband, who is an inspector with DAVC. Her husband along with a team of 15 policemen entered the school in plainclothes and picked as many as 14 boys and took them to the computer lab and assaulted. They were confined in the lab without even water for hours.

Later, when their parents came to know about the assault and illegal detention of their wards by the police officer and his team, they gathered in front of the school and staged a protest demanding severe action against the cops.

Meanwhile, the NCPCR also received a complaint about the rude act of the police officer and his colleagues.

Based on the complaint, the commission summoned the Thanjavur Collector Deepak Jacob and furnish an explanation regarding the incident.
