AIADMK meet hints at urban local body polls in April

Strongly indicating that urban local body polls may be held in April this year, AIADMK convenor O Panneerselvam and deputy convenor Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday urged party district secretaries to be prepared for the next phase of elections to be held soon after the Assembly budget session.

A day after declaring that the State government would not allow hydrocarbon projects in the delta region, the ruling AIADMK on Monday jumped into poll mode, conducting party district secretaries meeting for delta region on Monday followed by other districts.


The meeting also discussed setbacks faced by the party in the recently concluded rural local bodies and inclusion of minor parties into the AIADMK alliance fold. The party leadership also insisted that party workers campaign about CAA and the state welfare projects mooted by the AIADMK government.


Identification of urban local bodies and assembly seats that are favourable to the ruling party, region-specific campaigning strategy and the formation of an alliance for the civic polls were some of the topics discussed by the party seniors. On day one, party functionaries from Karur, Tiruchy, Dindigul, Madurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam took part in the meeting, sources said.


Both Palaniswami and Panneerselvam gave a pep talk insisting the party functionaries to work hard for the upcoming civic polls.
