CHENNAI: After receiving unrestrained adulation from his supporters for decades, TVK chief Vijay got a taste of factional feud, as a group of functionaries from Thoothukudi tried to block his car outside party headquarters in Panaiyur on Tuesday over district-level appointments.

The protest was led by A Ajitha Agnel, a functionary from Thoothukudi, who attempted to stop Vijay's vehicle as he arrived for consultations on office-bearers for several districts, including Thoothukudi.

Ajitha, who has been associated with the party since its inception, was expecting the district secretary post, only to find that Samuel Raj was going to be picked for the post. Her supporters alleged that the post was given to a person with little organisational work or public influence instead of Ajitha, who had worked to strengthen the party in the district.

Allegations were also raised that caste considerations and her family's political affiliations had played a role in the decision.

Sources said senior functionaries CTR Nirmal Kumar and A Rajmohan had held discussions with Ajitha ahead of Vijay's arrival, assuring her of a significant role at the State level and urging her not to escalate the issue. However, she insisted on meeting Vijay personally to air her grievances.

As Vijay's car entered the premises, protesters stood in its path but were moved aside by security guards. Vijay proceeded into the office without engaging in discussions. Later, he released the list of office-bearers for eight districts, including Thoothukudi.
