The day also saw the district’s infection tally shooting to 1,378 following 129 persons testing positive. This is the third day when the surge was above 100 positive cases, officials said.

Meanwhile, 70 kg of chicken was seized and destroyed from a private shop at Sathuvachari as officials tightened lockdown norms due to surge in cases. Now, meat shops are being allowed to open only on Sundays and Wednesdays, while other shops were permitted to open only on four days in a week.

Monday’s 129 positive cases, include 30 from Vellore’s commercial hub of Long bazaar, Mundi Street and Nethaji Market with officials claiming that the number of positive cases increased by ten times in the last one week. With already 134 traders from the area testing positive earlier, the wholesale market was shifted to the Mango market from Monday, but here too social distancing was lax, officials allege.
