9 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

NAGAPPATTINAM: Nine fishermen who ventured into the sea from Kodiakkarai were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday.

The fishing season is currently under way in Kodiakkarai near Vedharanyam in Nagapattinam district. Fishermen from various parts of the district have been staying at Kodiakkarai and are engaged in fishing activities.

Ponnukutty, Regan, Kumar, Anburaj and Koushik went fishing from Kodiakkarai in a fibre boat owned by Manjula of Perumalpettai in Mayiladuthurai district.

While they were fishing southeast of Kodiakkarai on Saturday morning, Sri Lankan Navy personnel who arrived there seized the fibre boat and detained the five fishermen, alleging that they had crossed the maritime boundary.

Similarly, another fibre boat owned by Mariyappan of Chinnangudi in Mayiladuthurai district was also seized, and four fishermen on board were arrested, according to reports.

All nine Tamil Nadu fishermen who were detained have been taken to the Sri Lankan Navy camp at Karanagar.
