CHENNAI: As the State government launched Green Tamil Nadu Mission to increase the green cover to 33 per cent, as many as 7,905 volunteers have registered to plant saplings across the State.
On Thursday, State Forest Department Minister K Ramachandran reviewed the progress of the initiative. The initiative was launched on September 24 by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
"Following this, www.greentnmission.com has been launched so that farmers, companies, residents associations and environmental activists can register to get required number of samplings. As many as 7,905 volunteers have registered and 12,705 saplings have been given," a release said.
Also, officials have been instructed to plant 2.50 crore saplings during the monsoon season. During second year, around 7.5 crore saplings have been planned for planting and in the third year, 15 crore saplings will be planted. During the fourth year and subsequent years, 25 crore saplings will be planted to increase green cover to 33 per cent in 10 years, the release added.
