Thol Thirumavalavan, leader of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Chidambaram MP, was one of the graduates to have received the degree completion certificate for his PhD thesis on a topic – ‘Mass religious conversions at Meenakshipuram: a victimological analysis’.
Around 713 students who completed the course in the academic year of 2017-18 in various disciplines also received the degree certificates in the 27th convocation of the University from the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University. The Governor also awarded medals to 102 meritorious students, in the presence of Minister for Higher Education and Pro-Chancellor of the University KP Anbalagan and Vice Chancellor of MSU K Pitchumani.
One of the chief guest of the event, Justice K Venkataraman, former High Court Judge, Madras, in his convocation address, urged the graduates to take up research and development to emerge as job providers to the society.
Earlier, the Governor inaugurated the integrated teaching block constructed at a cost of Rs 9.2 crore in the University in the presence of Higher Education Minister and Vice Chancellor, sources said.
The Higher Education Minister in his address said that the gross enrolment ration in higher education is on the rise year after year. The State has been allocating more funds towards the education sector to impart quality education, he said.
The Vice Chancellor of MSU in his welcome address said the state government during its previous budget session, allocated funds of Rs 20 crore towards the development of this University and encouraged research activity among students. As part of the fund allocated, a proposal was sent for establishing central instrumentation facility at this university, the Vice Chancellor said.
