A few days back, people passing near the Uyyankondan canal at Uyyankondan Thirumalai Kallangadu area found a 10 feet crocodile prowling in the waterbody. Since people throng to the amman temple near the canal on a regular basis, they were scared to see the mammal and soon passed on the information to the fire and rescue department officials. Based on the information, the personnel rushed to the spot on Saturday and established a hunt for the crocodile. After a two hours long operation, the fire personnel secured the 10 feet long crocodile that weighing around 600 kg. The fire personnel safely locked the secured crocodile and informed the forest officials.

The forest officials who rushed to the spot took the crocodile to Kallanai (Grand Anicut) in Thanjavur in a special transporting vehicle and let the crocodile free into the Cauvery.

According to the officials, the secured crocodile belonged to fresh water reptile variety which used to prey on cattle reared by the people in the banks of the waterbodies. The forest officials said that as the water level in Uyyankondan canal is minimal, the crocodile moved to the banks.
