6 TN fishermen arrested by SL Coast Guard return to Chennai

The officials from the fisheries department welcomed the fishermen and arranged transport to travel to their native places.

CHENNAI: Six Tamilnadu fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard to Chennai on Tuesday.

Six fishermen from Rameshwaram went fishing in the sea on August 27. While they were in the middle of the sea, the Coast Guard surrounded the fishermen and seized their boats for crossing the border.

Later, the fishermen were arrested and sent to prison. Following the arrest of the fishermen, their families requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to take steps to release the fishermen. Later, the Home Ministry with the help of the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka took steps to release the fishermen and all six of them were released and handed over to the Indian Embassy on September 12.

The Embassy arranged emergency visas for the fishermen and all of them reached the Chennai airport on Tuesday early morning on an Air India flight.
