4 held for smuggling two pairs of tusks at Bargur Hills in Erode

COIMBATORE: Four persons were arrested and two pairs of tusks were seized from them in Erode on Tuesday.

A police team involved in patrolling at Bargur Hills near Anthiyur, had spotted a person with a gunny bag under suspicious circumstances.

He was taken into custody and a check revealed the presence of tusks in the bag.

There were two pairs of tusks measuring around two feet in length. Inquiries with him identified as Chandrasekar (45) from Gunduchettipalayam near Kavundapadi revealed that he along with three others were planning to sell the tusks.

Police then arrested Rasu (40) and Chellappan (35), both from Kalvarai village and Mahendran (30) from Bargur Hills.

Police handed them over to the Forest Department, who were interrogating them to know how they got those tusks and if they poached the elephants for tusks. Further inquiries are on.
