2 firemen die in Madurai after building on fire collapses, TN CM announces solatium

Tragedy struck the families of two Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department on the Diwali eve when they died fighting fire in a shop in Madurai.

The incident happened on Friday night.

The two firemen died after the building on fire collapsed on them, and both were caught under the debris.

Two other fire service personnel got injured and were admitted to hospital.

According to police, the shop caught fire on Friday night and fire tenders reached the spot soon after that.

While the fire services team was dousing the flames, the old building came down on them trapping four under the debris.

The four were rescued but two fire service personnel –- Krishnamurty and Sivarasu -- died.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami announced aid for fire officers

"Rs 25 lakh each will be given to the families of fire officer Sivarajan and Krishnamurthy who died in the accident," said the Chief Minister on Saturday.

It has also been announced that 'one member of the families of the deceased officers will be given a government job.

Financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh for two injured fire officers have also been announced by the Chief Minister.
