1000 cubic ft of surplus water being released from Chembarambakkam lake

CHENNAI: The Water Resources Department (WRD) increased the quantum of water outflow from Chembarambakkam Lake to 1,000 cusecs from 200 cusecs on Wednesday. The present capacity is 3,210 mcft as against 3,645 mcft.

"The present inflow from catchment is around 500 cusecs. The level is 22.35 feet as against 24 feet, so we have increased the surplus discharge to 1,000 cusecs at 9 am on Wednesday. The water has been released as a precautionary measure and expected to get more inflow due to patch rains, " said a senior WRD official.

The district administration has issued a flood warning to the people in the low-lying areas along the banks of the Adyar River such as Sirukalathur Kavanur, Kundradthur Wayampedu, Tiruneermalai and Adyar river near the Chembarambakkam Lake.

At present, the current storage level at Red Hills 2,862 mcft, Poondi 2,006 mcft, Choolavaram reservoir has 795 and Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai 452 mcft.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre predicted moderate to heavy rain for Kancheepuram district. The inflow is expected to further increase in the catchment area of Chembarambakkam reservoir in the next few days.
